The Markha Valley homestay trek has to be one of the most amazing treks in Ladakh and the barren landscape of the valley and its unique Buddhist culture makes it even more special. It ventures into the two high Himalayan Mountain Passes over 15000 feet. We can get a sight of the Kangaytse and the Karakoram range. Markha Valley trek trails pass through amazing and scenic landscape alongside patches of wildflowers and some rare wild animals. we can see canyons in an array of different shades and colors, decorated with multi-colored prayer flags rising and falling in the breeze. The Markha Valley Trek passes through the great Hemis National park and gives an opportunity to meet the nomadic families as they herd their sheep’s and goats. There are options of both camping and homestay on this route.

Day 01

Leh drive to Chilling (3190m/ 10,465ft) trek Skyu (3370m) 3-4 hours

We drive from Leh to Chilling, cross the chilling bridge and we start our trek to the next village skyu. Highlight from the day is Sangam (confluence of Indus and Zanskar river) beautiful village of Chilling. Its an easy start to the trek . We stop for the night at skyu village.

Day 02

Skyu to Markha Valley (3,770m/ 12,368ft) trek 6-7 hours

Today will be one of the long walks, though the trail is not very difficult, gradually going up and down, beautiful and amazing sceneries all around. Passing through the villages of Sara and Chalak we reach Markha village.

Day 03

Markha to Hankar (4040m/ 13,254ft) trek 4-5 hours

The trail crosses two streams beyond Markha, and then we reach the beautiful Techa Gompa sitting beautifully on the top of the hill. The village of Umlung has a tea tent waiting for you before you continue your trek further. You get your first view of the mighty Kangyatse before you reach the village of Hankar.

Day 04

Hankar to Nimaling (4840m/ 15,879) trek 5/6 hours

The trail leads us to our next destination the plateau of Nimaling, gradual climb but none the less exceptional. We cross the majestic Hankar fort and some beautiful Chortens as we pass the village, Nimaling is where the villagers bring their cattle for grazing in the summer.

Day 05

Nimaling crossing Kongmaru La (5,130m/16,830ft) to Chogdo (3,910m/ 12,828ft) Shang Sumdo (3,680m) trek 7/8 hours drive Leh 1 hour

We ascend the highest point on the trek the Kongmaru La, once up enjoy the beauty of Kangyatse and the Karakoram range from the pass, take your time click pictures from here we descend down Shang gorge which is quite steep. Crossing the small river couple of times before we reach Shang sumdo, we have the option of getting picked up from chogdo village as the roads have been built till the village. We drive back to Leh and check in to the hotel.
