Hemis To Tsomoriri Trek

This trek starts from Hemis about 45 km from Leh. It’s a demanding camping trek yet beautiful for those that love trekking, camping and challenges as there will be several passes, high altitude plateau, camping with stunning landscape and scenic lakes of Tsomoriri and Tsokar witnessing the nomads of Changthang and its wildlife.

Day 1:

Leh drive to Hemis (3,678m/ 12,066ft ) 45 km 1 hour to Shang Sumdo (3,680m/ 12,073ft)

Drive to Hemis monastery of the Drukpa sect one of the richest monasteries in the valley. It takes about an hour to get to Hemis from Leh. We can either go by taxi to Shang Sumdo or trek along from Martselang its optional. It will be rather an easy day.

Day 2:

Shang Sumdo to Lartse (4,590m/15,059ft) trek 5-6 hours

Today we enter Markha valley, walking along the river amidst the beautiful villages of Chogdo and Chuskurmo we trek to Lartsa our next destination for the day.

Day 3:

Lartse to Nimaling (4,840m/ 15,879ft) via Kongmaru La (5,270m/17,290ft) Thachungtse (4,380m/ 14,370ft) trek 6-7 hours

Today we will be crossing the Kongmarula pass, from the pass you get to see an amazing view of the great Kangyatse and the Karakoram range, we head down from here to Nimaling grazing place for the herds in the summer and further down to Thachungtse our next stop for the night.

Day 4:

Thachungtse to Yakrupal (4,610m/ 15,124ft) trek 5/6 hours

Today we go crossing the remote and barren valley of Langthang to our next stop Yakrupal.

Day 5:

Yakrupal to Khar (4,290m/ 14,074ft) via Zalungkarpo La (5,170m/ 16,961ft) trek 7-8 hours

We will be crossing the Zalungkarpo pass, once you at the top you can get a spectacular view of the Zanskar range and the Changthang plateau, after enjoying the scenic beauty we head downhill from here crossing several rivers and streams before we reach our next destination Khar.

Day 6:

Khar to Dat (4,308m/ 14,133ft) trek 4-5 hours

We start off from where we left the previous day, following the same trekking trail until you reach Tangste Sumdo, from here we take the left trail that leads to our next stop Dat village.

Day 7:

Dat to Lungmochey (4,618m/ 15,150ft) trek 6-7 hours

Walking along the valley, enjoying the majestic landscape, we climb the pass rather an easy one to reach Yar la (4935m), from here we walk down to Lungmochey to camp for the night.

Day 8:

Lungmochey to Zara (4,630m/ 15,190ft) trek 5-6 hours

Today we will be passing the Kharnak nomads settlement Yagang, once we cross the settlement we follow the trail that leads to Zara.

Day 9:

Zara to Ponganagu (4,652m/ 15,262ft) trek 5 hours

We head to our next stop crossing the Manali-Leh Highway, from here head towards the trail that leads to Ponganagu on the way to the famous salt lake Tsokar lake. We can catch a sight of wildlife along the way such as marmots, kiang (Tibetan wild asses) and migratory birds.

Day 10:

Ponganagu to Nuruchan (4,678m/ 15,347ft) trek 4-5 hours

Today we walk along the Tsokar lake, overlooking the village of Tsokar and a few camps. We can catch a glimpse of the Tsokar monastery just above the village of Tsokar. We move along to our next destination another grazing land of Nuruchan.

Day 11:

Nuruchan to Kyamayuri La (5,416m/ 17,769ft) to Gyamar Barma (5,195m/ 16,925ft) trek 7-8 hour

Today will be a long day, we start by crossing the Horlam kongka la, once we are on the top it’s an easy walk down to Rachung Karu, passing through a couple of nomadic settlements. We cross the Kyamayur la before we stop for the night at Gyamar Barma valley.

Day 12:

Gyamar Barma to Kartse La (5,384m/ 17,664ft) to Gyamar (5,158m/ 16,992ft) trek 3-4 hours

It will be rather an easy day today, after crossing the Kartse la we walk down to the beautiful valley of Gyamar.

Day 13

Gyamar to Yalung Nyau La (5,430m/ 17,814ft) to Korzok (4,554m/ 14,940ft) trek 6-7 hours

Today we gradually ascend towards the highest point or highlight of the trek Yalung Nyau la, once on the top its offers us the first glimpse of the spectacular and amazing Tsomoriri lake. We head down to the village of Korzok along the lake.

Day 14:

Korzok drive to Leh (240 km/ 7 hrs)

We drive back to Leh, passing through Chumathang (hot springs) passing through Karu, Thiksey and finally back in Leh.
